چکیده

Numerical simulations of the multi-phase interstellar medium have been carried out, using a 3D, nonlinear, magnetohydrodynamic, shearing-box model, with random motions driven by supernova explosions. These calculations incorporate the effects of magnetic fields and rotation in 3D; these play important dynamical roles in the galaxy, but are neglected in many other simulations. The supernovae driving the motions are not arbitrarily imposed, but occur where gas accumulates into cold, dense clouds; their implementation uses a physically motivated model for the evolution of such clouds. The process is self-regulating, and produces mean supernova rates as part of the solution. Simulations with differing mean density show a power law relation between the supernova rate and density, with exponent 1.7; this value is within the range suggested from observations (taking star formation rate as a proxy for supernova rate). The global structure of the supernova driven medium is strongly affected by the presence of magnetic fields; e.g. for one solution the filling factor of hot gas is found to vary from 0.19 (with no field) to 0.12 (with initial mid-plane field B0 = 6μG).

Variable interstellar radiation fields in simulated dwarf galaxies: supernovae versus photoelectric heating

We present high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies including self-gravity, non-equilibrium cooling and chemistry, interstellar radiation fields (ISRF) and shielding, star formation, and stellar feedback. This includes spatially and temporally varying photoelectric (PE) heating, photoionization, resolved supernova (SN) blast waves and metal enrichment. A new flexibl...

Turbulent Structure of a Stratified Supernova-driven Interstellar Medium

To study how supernova feedback structures the turbulent interstellar medium, we construct 3D models of vertically stratified gas stirred by discrete supernova explosions, including vertical gravitational field and parametrized heating and cooling. The models reproduce many observed characteristics of the Galaxy such as global circulation of gas (i.e., galactic fountain) and the existence of co...

Neutrino decay and the thermochemical equilibrium of the interstellar medium

We calculate the thermochemical equilibrium of the diffuse interstellar medium, including ionization by a photon flux Fν from neutrino decay. The main heating mechanism considered is photoelectrons from grains and PAHs. For the studied range of Fν values, there always exists two regions of stability (a warm and a cold phase) that can coexist in equilibrium if the thermal interstellar pressure i...

The Importance of Magnetic-field-oriented Thermal Conduction in the Interaction of Snr Shocks with Interstellar Clouds

We explore the importance of magnetic-field-oriented thermal conduction in the interaction of supernova remnant (SNR) shocks with radiative gas clouds and in determining the mass and energy exchange between the clouds and the hot surrounding medium. We perform 2.5D MHD simulations of a shock impacting on an isolated gas cloud, including anisotropic thermal conduction and radiative cooling; we c...
